OVERVIEW
Qatar is committed to creating a sustainable economy and a sound economic future by investing energy revenue into private sector industrial development and socioeconomic initiatives that further establish Qatar as the sporting, cultural and financial capital of the Middle East.
Located on the east coast of Qatar in the heart of the Gulf, Doha is the major commercial centre of the country, and holds the main port. Boarded by the calming Corniche bay on one side, and the golden sands of the desert on the other, Doha’s international residents enjoy an alluring blend of cultural and contemporary lifestyle.
Doha is quickly earning a global reputation for excellence in hosting major events. Many international bodies choose Doha for conferences and seminars, WTO Conferences and the annual AIPS Congress for sports journalism. In addition, the city is becoming a major hub for sporting events in the region hosting events such as the Football Cup (Under 19's), Athletics Grand Prix, Tennis Open, Golf Masters. MotoGP and the upcoming 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.
Doha's world class hotels and architecturally significant buildings attract tourists and business visitors from all over the globe. A number of top-class hotels host a range of activities, while events ranging from the motorcycle grand prix to top tennis and golf tournaments attract the biggest names in international sport.
From 1-15 December this year, Doha will be in the international spotlight when it hosts the 15th Asian Games, and event that confirms its reputation as the sports capital for the Middle East. Tens of thousands of competitors and spectators will be in Doha to experience the largest celebration Asia has ever seen.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs continuously strives to establish and develop close direct ties of cooperation with all peace-loving countries and peoples of the world. Within that policy, it is keen to participate actively in efforts to deal with the concerns and challenges that the Gulf region encounters. In addition to developing bilateral ties, the State endeavours to pursue closer relations with other nations through its participation in various organizations and agencies at regional, Arab and international levels.
Qatar was actively involved in the formation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and has hosted a number of their Supreme Council Summit Meetings. Qatar is also a member of:

• The World Trade Organization (WTO)
• Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
• The Organization of the Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC)
• The Arab League
• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank
• The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)
• The Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC)
In addition, Qatar has 40 diplomatic embassies and 6 general consulates abroad, with over 50 foreign Diplomatic Representatives in Qatar. In 2002, the National Human Rights Committee of Qatar was established by Emiri decree, and is committed to meeting the objectives set out by international conventions and treaties in accordance with the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
